Botox ® is an abbreviation of Botulinum Toxin which is a prescription only medication. It’s used for a number of medical treatments, as well as a cosmetic treatment.
What is Botox ®?
Made from botulin, Botox ® is medically used to treat muscular conditions. It temporarily causes paralysis of the muscle, making it relax. This has a host of uses in medical treatments, however, the drug is more well known for its effects in cosmetic treatments.
Botox ® was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles and frown lines in 2002.
Dysport, (Rebranded Azzalure), was also approved for the same use in 2009. Botox® is the most commonly used term when describing Botulinum toxin so we tend to refer to the treatment as Botox®.
Safety with injectable treatments
At the Everything Skin Clinic™, we offer a range of muscle relaxing injection treatments. During Botox ® treatment, we use of a special device called Accuvein helps our practitioners see the vascular network below the skin.
This allows us to avoid these vessels, which prevents some of the common problems associated with injectable treatments such as bruising and swelling. The Accuvein device also helps us to look into the skin to select the optimal injection site to reduce any downtime.
Botox® injections work by relaxing the muscles and this can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of the face.
Over the years, the muscles in the face contract and cause the skin to move into a frown or a squint, we also lose the elasticity in the skin, as a result, our skin forms lines such as crow’s feet and frown lines.
For the lower face, Botox® works by releasing the pull on certain muscles preventing the sagging associated with aging.
Botox ® Treatment Areas
Upper Face Botox ®
Crow’s feet lines appear at the side of the eyes and are the result of squinting and smiling.
Forehead lines are usually only visible in younger people when frowning, but as we age they become more visible.
Frown lines are between the brows running vertically (the lines you get when you frown heavily). Patients often say that strong lines in this area make them look cross even when they are not. Botox® injections for both male and female patients helps to soften the look of the face.
Bunny lines are the lines that look like creases across the bridge of the nose between the eyebrows. They are the lines that appear when you wrinkle your nose like a bunny. As the skin ages, these lines fail to spring back and can give a more aged appearance.
Lower face Botox ®
Gummy smile: When some people smile, they may find that too much of their gum is visible, this is more common on the top palate. The technical name for this is excessive gingival display.
A number of methods are available to correct this. Today, the most common treatment is the use of Botox® to weaken and soften the muscles in the area to stop them pulling the lip upwards.
If the chin is set back (receded), the shape of the face often looks distorted. Botox® can help to relax the muscles that pull chin the back. This softens the profile and creates a softer more naturally relaxed look.
As a natural part of the ageing process, the skin on the lower face begins to droop due to its loss of elasticity and gravity pulling it downwards.
Muscle relaxing injections to the jawline and into the Platysma below the jaw muscles helps to reduce the sagging and drooping of the jawline.
Marionette lines are lines that protrude downwards from the lip. A combination of Botox® and dermal fillers can treat this. The toxin will relax the muscles causing the downward pull to help the skin spring back up. The deeper folds may need additional help from Dermal Fillers.
What brands of Botox® do you use?
At the Everything Skin Clinic™, we use two products, Botox® and Azzalure. These two products are both compounds of botulinum toxin type A.
How long does the treatment take?
The treatment takes around 15 – 20 minutes depending on the areas treated. All patients need to have a thorough consultation prior to treatment
Does it hurt?
The toxin is always administered with a small fine needle so there may be some discomfort. We can minimise this discomfort by cooling the skin in the treatment area before the injections.
How long do the results last?
The relaxing effect of the muscle lasts for between 4 – 6 months. Results vary between patients.
Are there any side effects?
The potential side effects of Botox® injections include swelling, bruising and redness around the injection site. The use of the Accuvein device reduces the potential for these effects.
In a small number of cases, you may require further treatment if the result is asymmetric.
In a very small number of cases, patients can be immune to the effects of the drug, which means you may only see minimal results.
